Book Review: A Guy Like Me

Hilarious, candid, and reflective, A Guy Like Me recounts the heartwarming story of John Scott: an average joe who became a sports superhero overnight.

Known as a willing-and-able fighter and bruiser in the league, John Scott was a surprising and tongue-and-cheek nominee for the NHL All-Star Game. In order to prevent him from playing in the game, his current team—the Phoenix Coyotes—traded Scott to the Montreal Canadians, who demoted him to the AHL team in an attempt to disqualify him from playing in the All-Star Game.

Fans were outraged and Scott was devastated. The league relented, and Scott not only was invited to attend the NHL game in Nashville, but was nominated a team captain. The media and sports fans at large fell in love with the giant six-foot-eight player who by all means, was just a normal guy and no superstar player. This is his personal memoir—detailing his life growing up and how he was able to keep his sense of humor and become the ultimate Cinderella-Story of hockey.

John Scott may be the only one who can claim to be all of the above. He was never the best player on his team, and his height was often seen as a disadvantage by his coaches.

Review: A Guy Like Me by John Scott

We all know the story. A couple of bloggers wanted to stick it to the NHL by stuffing the ballot box and voting an enforcer into the All-Star Game. Regardless of how you feel about fighting in hockey, or the validity of the All-Star Game, it was hard not to be happy for the big guy. Today, Scott is without an NHL contract.

The sports editor offered it to me, and I read it during the week. Here are my thoughts on it, and excerpts from my favourite parts of it. And for the game , a more positive-minded campaign from Latvia sent Zemgus Girgensons to the top of the all-star ballot. The team, and the league, tried to convince him to decline the invitation. Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin explained that he was forced to take Scott in the deal, without giving details.

For 13 seasons Avery played for some of the toughest, most storied franchises in the league, including the Detroit Red Wings, the Los Angeles Kings, and the New York Rangers, making his mark in each city as a player that was sometimes loved, often despised, but always controversial. From minor-hockey phenomenon to Hall of Fame sensation, Wayne Gretzky rewrote the record books, his accomplishments becoming the stuff of legend.

We head down the hall a few steps, into the stick room of all places, and he shuts the door. I hear him perfectly the first time, but I need him to say it again. My mind is racing a mile a minute. This is how it goes.
